Before any cards are dealt a player must place a small blind & a big blind which are fixed amounts that players must put into the pot before they can bet on their hands. Then two cards are dealt to each player, face down. Each player must then decide if they want to continue playing their hand or not. If they do, they will raise the amount they bet. If they don’t, they will fold.

Once everyone has decided to continue the betting round the dealer deals three more cards, face up, on the table which anyone can use. This is called the flop. Now everyone will be able to see how strong their hand is. For example, if someone has pocket kings and the flop comes with an ace this could spell disaster for their hand. The same is true if the board has tons of straight and flush cards.

At this point, a player can either check the pot or call the bet of another player to stay in the round. If they raise the bet, the other players can call their new bet or fold. Then the remaining players will show their hands & the winner will be declared.
